Wooden Magnetic Fishing Game for Kids, Ages 3+ — 15 Fish Set
Wooden Magnetic Fishing Game for Kids, Ages 3+ — 15 Fish Set
Give a three-year-old a magnetic fishing rod and watch what happens to their face the first time a fish jumps up and sticks. Then watch them do it again. And again. And roughly forty more times, without once looking up.
Magnetic fishing is one of the few activities that is genuinely, instantly rewarding for a young child while still being difficult. Lining up a wobbling rod over a small target takes the whole body: eyes, wrist, shoulder, patience. It looks like a game. It is hand-eye coordination practice disguised as one.
What's Included
- 15 wooden sea creatures, each a different animal — whale, crab, turtle, swordfish, clownfish, pufferfish, jellyfish, stingray, shrimp and more — with a magnetic disc set into the middle of each one. The largest pieces measure about 8.5 × 3 cm (3.3 × 1.2 in).
- 1 wooden fishing rod, 15 cm (5.9 in) long, with a red cord and a magnetic hook on the end
- No box or base is included — the fish are supplied loose, so you will want a bowl or a tray of your own to fish out of
Why This Game Works
- No letters, no numbers — and that is deliberate. Many fishing sets print the alphabet on the fish, which quietly turns a joyful game into a drill and pushes the whole thing out of reach for the youngest players. These are simply sea creatures. A three-year-old can play properly on day one, a five-year-old can invent counting and colour games on top, and it works just as well in a household where English is the second language spoken at home.
- Fifteen fish is the right number. Enough that the board looks full and a round takes real effort. Few enough that tidying up is a thirty-second job and you notice immediately if one goes missing.
- Wood, not plastic. It sounds better on a wooden floor and it does not develop that scuffed, brittle look after a month.
- One rod, which makes it a turn-taking game. The set includes a single rod, so two children play by passing it back and forth — waiting, counting someone else's catch, and cheering for it. If you would rather have two children fishing at once, order a second set.
- The rules are whatever you decide they are. Catch them all against the clock. Catch only the blue ones. Catch one with your eyes shut. Because nothing is printed on the fish, the game can be rewritten every afternoon to suit whoever is playing — which is precisely why it lasts longer than a set with a fixed right answer.
Ages & Safety
Recommended for ages 3 and up. The fish are small and contain magnets. Small parts and magnets are a serious hazard if swallowed — swallowed magnets can cause severe internal injury and require immediate medical attention. Keep this set for supervised play, check pieces for damage before each session, and store it out of reach of children under 3. Colours and finish may vary slightly from the photographs.
