A bucket only ever makes one shape, and once it's made there is nothing to do with it. Children don't get bored of sand — they get bored when there is nothing to build toward.

Moulds change what the sand is for. Fill, press, lift — and a shape is standing there that wasn't a second ago, and then there is a second one to set beside it. The tools do the digging, packing and smoothing that hands alone can't manage. Wet sand holds its shape and then gives way when it's overloaded, so the whole afternoon becomes a slow argument with gravity that they get to keep having.

How long it takes, and why

Read this before you order, because it is the one thing about us that might not suit you.

This ships direct from the production partner who makes it. There is no warehouse sitting in the middle, which is the reason the set is priced the way it is — and also the reason it is slow. Processing takes 7–14 business days, then 10–20 business days in transit. Ordering today, plan on roughly three to seven weeks. Shipping is free.

We would rather put that here, in front of the buy button, than in a confirmation email you read afterwards.

Which makes the timing the only real decision here. Work backwards from the trip. If there is a holiday, a half-term or a weekend away you already have in the diary, count back seven weeks from it — that is your order date, and it is usually earlier than people think. A set that lands the week after you get home is a set that waits a year.

If there is no trip in the diary, it still isn't a wasted buy: the same set works in a garden sandbox or a tray of kinetic sand indoors, which is what most of them end up doing between holidays.

Does sand come with it?
No. This is the tool set. You bring the beach, the sandbox or the tray of kinetic sand.

What size are the pieces?
We are re-measuring the set against the new production run and will publish the sizes here once we have it in hand. We would rather leave a number off the page than print one we haven't checked ourselves. If you need exact dimensions before you order, message us and ask.

Will it work with dry sand?
Not well, and no mould would. Damp sand is what holds an edge. At the beach that solves itself near the waterline; in a garden sandbox a watering can does it.

Does it work with kinetic sand indoors?
Yes — that is what a lot of these end up doing out of season, on a tray on the kitchen table.

Why does this last longer than a bucket?
A bucket makes one finished shape, and once it's tipped out there is nothing left to do with it. A moulded shape is a piece of something bigger, which is the whole reason the play runs past nine minutes.

How do I get it clean before it goes back in the bag?
Rinse it under a tap and leave it to dry. Nothing electronic, nothing that minds water.
